Did You Know the Director of The Ruins Shot a New Film?

For the longest time I’ve wondered what happened to Carter Smith, the director of The Ruins.  Regardless of what you think about the 2008 film, there was certainly no reason for him to land in any sort of “director jail.”

The Ruins, based on the novel by Scott B. Smith, was Carter’s feature debut and it was confidently directed.  The film proved he had the chops to take on more material.

Sadly, he didn’t jump into anything right away.

Instead, he returned to the short film world for Yearbook; earlier this year, however, we have learned that sat in the director’s chair for another feature.

Carter is currently in post-production on Jamie Marks is Dead, an adaptation of the Christopher Barzak novel “One for Sorrow” which is part supernatural thriller, part drama.  Noah Silver (The Borgias) plays the eponymous Jamie Marks and he’s joined by Liv Tyler and Judy Greer.

Barzak wrote a blog on his official site about his experience being on set right here.

The book was published in 2007, here’s the publisher’s synopsis:

Adam McCormick had just turned fifteen when the body was found in the woods. It is the beginning of an autumn that will change his life forever. Jamie Marks was a boy a lot like Adam, a boy no one paid much attention to—a boy almost no one would truly miss. And for the first time, Adam feels he has a purpose. Now, more than ever, Jamie needs a friend. But the longer Adam holds on to Jamie’s ghost, the longer he keeps his friend tethered to a world where he no longer belongs…and the weaker Adam’s own ties to the living become. Now, to find his way back, Adam must learn for himself what it truly means to be alive.

So, there you go!  If you ever wondered what happened to Carter Smith, well, he’s got a new film on the way…
