In 2001, McFarlane Toys unleashed a series of unholy creations in toy form: Clive Barker’s Tortured Souls. The collectibles were unlike anything released at that time, blending S&M and gore. Each figure was accompanied by a backstory by Barker; needless to say, he had the world of Tortured Souls mapped out quite clearly, so, it was no surprise Hollywood jumped on the property.
Inside, you’re going to find the “tone” trailer that was used back in ’01 by Barker and Todd McFarlane to sell Tortured Souls to Universal. The trailer cobbles together clips from various films, but paints a portrait of what was to come. Barker was writing the script at the time.
I recall reading the script well over a decade ago. What I remember of the story is that it told of a couple on the rocks. One of them (I believe it was the wife) is transported to the realm of the Tortured Souls – Primordium – while her body is left behind, inhabited by a malevolent force. Of course, all of the Tortured Souls characters made an appearance. Alas, the film never came to fruition. The action figures, however, did spawn a second line-up.
