Deadline is reporting that David R. Ellis has passed away at the age of 60.  At the time of this writing, his death is "sudden" and the causes are unknown (we'll update you as we hear more on that).

Ellis is absolutely no stranger to the horror community having landed on the scene with Final Destination 2, his first feature horror effort in the director's chair.  He followed that with Snakes on a Plane, Asylum, The Final Destination and Shark Night 3D.

Ellis' career was largely made up of stunt performing and coordinating on films such as Smokey and the Bandit, Deathsport, The Beastmaster and much, much more.

He was at work on Kite, an adaptation of the Japanese anime, with Samuel L. Jackson in South Africa when he passed away.

Ellis was an incredibly nice and sweet guy in the many times I've chatted with him about the films he directed.  He will be missed!
