We’re still working on editing and uploading all of our video interviews from this year’s New York Comic Con, but one of the more exciting panels was for James Wan’s The Conjuring, starring Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Lili Taylor and Ron Livingston, a period horror flick that was really eaten up by the horror fans in the IGN Theater on Saturday.
Before the panel, ShockTillYouDrop.com had a chance to speak with Wan and Wilson and we eventually got around to asking about the status of Insidious 2.
Wan has a few more weeks of work to do on The Conjuring, which was pushed back to next July to take advantage of how well the movie tested among audiences – not that we’re surprised based on the reaction we saw – but he’s definitely going to be more involved with the sequel to Insidious than he was with the entire Saw franchise, as he told us.
“I think the sequel to ‘Insidious’ is kind of my reaction to Saw where for my own reason I wasn’t as involved in the sequels, and so I felt with Insidious, think it would be good to shepherd it and keep it more in track to the version I had when I made the first film so that it doesn’t detour too far. So yeah, I’m kind of working with Leigh on the story and the script.”
We were curious whether James and Leigh actually had some sort of long-term plans for Insidious when they first wrote it that might lead to sequels.
“I never set out to make sequels to any of my films I direct,” Wan admitted. “If they happen, that’s great because that means people out there love it and they want more of it, but I always felt with Insidious we created this really interesting world that we can explore more, and so even though we didn’t set out to make a sequel, I felt that there are stories still out there that could be told.”
When we spoke with Wilson afterwards, we wondered about what he had coming up and he said he had just wrapped shooting Jack Plotnick’s sci-fi comedy Space Station 76 with Liv Tyler and Matt Bomer (which you can learn more about when we post the video) and he also thought that Insidious 2 will be sooner rather than later:
“We’re still trying to figure out this Insidious sequel and then we should jump onto that. I think that will probably be the next big thing. I might find something small in between that I can dig into, but I’m happy being a Dad.”
We’ll have the full video interviews with both gentlemen up very soon where they talk extensively about The Conjuring, out July 19, 2013, as well as some stuff from the New York Comic Con panel.
