"Twilight" Called, or, How I Turned into a Teenage Girl

Posted by: Ryan Rotten

Not really.  But I thought for sure I'd awaken one morning in a unicorn t-shirt, pig-tails and feeling a serious need to listen to some Gwen Stefani (picture that, friends!) based on everything I've been doing to prep for my set visit to Summit Entertainment's Twilight.  What does that entail?  Sifting through countless blogs dedicated to the Stephenie Meyer book, reading the book, talking to fans, trying to understand the fans, sitting in a room, staring at a wall, not seeing the wall, looking past the wall...  Ahem, well, I'm back now and all I've got to say is...

...this movie's going to be huge.  The producers know it.  The director knows it.  I'm not sure if the actors quite grasp what they've gotten themselves into.  Dismiss it all you want, but when I arrived on set in Portland, Oregon, I was told fans were camped outside the film's high school location the night before wrapped in blankets.  Portland is colder than a witch's tit now, so that's some damn commitment right there.  Later in the day, I fell witness to the return of said Twilight disciples.  One teen male fan boasted, "I've read all the books...and I'm not a mom!"

I must admit to being somewhat thrilled by the fact that they were shooting a scene I recognized from the book (I'm not done with the read yet, but I will be soon).  But let's make this clear - the film is for an audience that doesn't really include me.  Look at the ingredients:  Teens.  Love.  Vampire love.  Drama.  Heartbreak.

Still, I'm mildly fascinated by what makes this thing called Twilight tick - so I forge ahead with the coverage.  Anyway, that's where I've been the past day.  I'm tired.  Cold.  And in a hotel room that's bigger than most apartments I've seen in L.A.  Seriously, this joint's got a living room, a bedroom and bathroom.  Insane.

I'll splash some pics from the set, interviews and more on Shock's home page soon enough.

Dear Mr. Rotten,

You needn't become a teenaged girl to
appreciate good writing, drama, suspense,
love, honesty or devotion.

Your comments are fairly amusing tho, so
I am looking forward to future interviews.

Never underestimate art and creativity, you
may become a fan after all.

Hey there!

My sarcasm is just that, playful - so don't take offense. Like I said, the subject matter is totally not my bag, but I am curious to see what lies deep beneath this fandom!

Posted by: Briq on March 29, 2008 at 01:45:46

It is going to be huge. There's so much hype already, and it's only March.

Posted by: issi on March 29, 2008 at 02:05:42

You say "the subject matter is totally not my bag" but that's the best thing about twilight! It has that appeal, that quality that's so rare to find these days in good books/movies/stories/whatever! It can appeal to everyone is someway, - maybe not the vampire or romance or teen-dream but there's the whole life vs. immortality debate, morals & ethics, the author herself puts forward a great role-model for both aspiring writers and just an altogether grounded and good person. Twilight can be seen in so many ways, that i'd say you're a brick wall if you can't find something to entice your interests (or arguements).

But besides my rant, twilight rocks! and the fandom is (possibly) even better! so pumped for the movie! can't wait to read your interview/see pics/etc

Entertaining report, I agree with Isabella! Looking forward to the pictures and more of your write ups.

"...this movie's going to be huge. The producers know it. The director knows it. I'm not sure if the actors quite grasp what they've gotten themselves into."

Eep. I love it. I bet Rob has NO IDEA how much girls love/lust after him right now.

And seriously Ryan, whether you enjoyed the book or not, I love you anyway for being there and for the stuff you're going to post about it.

Welcome to Portland, Oregon, Ryan.

Twilight is going to be huge. The cast really couldn't know how insane it will most likely get for them. And Robert... O Robert- well, if he only knew the reaction he gets from his fans. Especially some of the over 25 crowd (I'm 31)!! It may not be for everyone but I know I'm going to see it 5 times when it comes out in December!! I cannot wait.

Posted by: Callista on March 29, 2008 at 11:39:56

Hey I understand that the story is not your thing. Its just pretty sweet that you even read it. My boyfriend read it to see what I was obsessing about and he wasn't that into it either BUT he wants to go see the Movie opening night w/me just to see if maybe he will like it on screen better. anyway again I say YOU ROCK MR.Rotten!!

Posted by: Alexa on March 29, 2008 at 12:11:38

yep, you got it: we dont do thing half way :D

Posted by: Megan on March 29, 2008 at 12:25:00

haha psh...ya we're dedicated. because this is the best book in the entire world and we want to be there to support the cast(for those of you who don't, need to get over it). This book series reaches mostly out to girls, but imagine if all the guys read them. it would deffinitly be bigger than Harry Potter. im not baggin on harry potter, i like them too, im just sayin. if i could i would totally be outside the set wrapped in blankets but unfortuantly i have school and im a dedicated student. but im all over the sites 24/7.
so ya....we're not goin ANYWHERE! :D

Posted by: Courtney on March 29, 2008 at 13:13:06

Yes, getting in to the series is getting in to a lot.

Posted by: andrea on March 29, 2008 at 14:06:37

i sent questions for robpat. and i can't wait for his answers. they may not be of my questions but oh well.. post them up soon please lol.. i love you

Mr. Rotten, good reporting! I’m so happy the “light-bulb” is finally coming on in the media…this Twilight series is a romantic, thriller classic!

Also, you may want to check out twilightmoms.com, teens aren’t the only ones excited about the movie.

Posted by: Leah on March 29, 2008 at 15:08:03

*snickers*

Teenage fandoms are quite hardcore when it comes to their favorite... well... anything.

Somehow, through my psychological study of teenage social behavior, I managed to get snagged into the Twilight fray... and I somewhat shamefully admit that I've become a fan.

I haven't been following the film coverage (via twilight sites) really closely, but I do know that the media is turning quite a blindside to something that will probably blow a box office record.

Good luck.

WOW i can NOT wait for this movie!! it is definitely going to be a HUGE HUGE success!! i really don't think the actors in the movie have any idea how bug they will be after this movie..my friends an I already know all the names by heart and the faces!gosh i cant wait for the premier!!!! if i lived anywhere near Portland id be there sleeping outside the building waiting for a glimpse at Robert Pattinson!

Posted by: Olivia on March 29, 2008 at 19:11:53

Ryan, thank you so much for the report and for keeping up with "Twilight" even though it's not your personal cup of tea. It's quite interesting that the vast majority of the world's population are totally clueless as to just how HUGE this movie will be. Media outlets will surely be kicking themselves for not jumping on the bandwagon sooner come December. Keep up the great work, ShockTillYouDrop! Way to be on top of things!

Kim, please STFU about Twilight Moms. I'm sick to death of Twilight Moms promoting themselves everywhere I turn. WHO CARES if "teenagers aren't the only fans"? Do you want a cookie?

Posted by: Sampire on March 29, 2008 at 19:49:13

I think Olivia is the one who was freaking out on the Kim girl for bringing up Twilight Moms. I get that you're sick of it, believe me, but seriously.. you might try to be a little bit nicer. please and thanks. =)

and, this seriously is ridiculously huge. The fanbase for this series and for the movie are is so enormous, it is simply amazing. I'm proud to call myself a fanpire, too. Yeah, I know. No one has probably heard anyone call twilight fans fanpires. That is what I call us. I suppose I could say twilighters or twihards, but I liek fanpires. =D

oh, and Ryan Rotten, you're amazing. I applaud
any guy who has the nerve to read these books.
I know that all of you males are probably really nervous about how you'll be viewed due to reading "chick books," but honestly, you have no idea how many girls are going to love you for reading them. Also, I hope that you got a little insight on what a girl wants from a guy. If any guy ever wants advice on how to attrack "chicks" he should definitely read this series.

=D welcome to the obsession.

I loved the "Twilight" Series and can't wait for the movie. It's about time someone in the media is starting to taking notice of how big this movie will be. Twilight has a huge fan- base, you can't go any where without finding someone who hasn't read twilight.

Posted by: stephanie on March 29, 2008 at 23:33:10

heck yeah they know this is gonna be big!
it's really incredible the amount of fans that are desperatly waiting for this movie (including me ofcourse)
....and yes, the actors have no idea what they've gotten themselves into....

Posted by: Laurie on March 30, 2008 at 01:18:21

I didn't realize how huge this series was about to be when I read it a few months ago. I am a elementary school teacher and it was recommended by our literacy coach who said it was a good read. I thought. . . hmm. A teenage girl falls in love with a vampire. No thanks. But I bought the book anyway. It sat on my shelf for at least a month before I finally read it. I have never had a book touch me the way this one has. It's insane. And then I discover after reading the rest of the books that a fourth book is coming in August AND a movie in December! I have now recommended this book to anyone who will listen to me.
